Week 5: Lonnie. I've been working on a larger scale portrait project of Alzheimer's disease for over a year now. The project started while I was home in NY visiting my Grandmother, and my hope is that in the end I will be able to convey the subtle, but noticeable effects that begin to take shape during the first stages of the diagnosis.
I've photographed Lonnie a few times over the past year, and it's interesting to see how his memory can change from day to day. Generally he remembers me, but when I shot him this week he appeared to have no recollection. After the portrait, someone asked him why he wasn't smiling. Lonnie replied that I always ask him to be more serious.
